In a process wherein a nylon-forming material is polycondensed in the presence of a phosphinic additive which is a mono- or di-alkyl, mono or di-aryl or mono-alkyl mono-aryl phosphinic acid (or a diamine salt thereof), the resultant polymer being extruded and quenched in the form of a ribbon which is cut into chips which are meltspun into filaments, the chips are scoured in water to reduce the water-soluble content of the phosphinic additive therein, dried, melted and extruded into filaments by melt spinning. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polypentamethylene adipamide, polyoctamethylene adipamide, polydecamethylene sebacamide, poly-pentamethylene sebacamide, polyaminoundecanoic acid and poly-e -caprolactam. Examples are given.
