The invention concerns a method for preparing a 4-alkoxycarbonylamino-1-benzyl-4-phenylpiperidine of formula (I) by hydrolysis of 1-benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine (II) in acid medium and treatment of 1-benzyl-4-phenyl-4-piperidinecarboxamide (III) thus obtained with bromine in the presence of an alkaline alcoholate. The invention also concerns a method for preparing 4-methylamino-4-phenylpiperidine from said compound (II).
