PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forklift capable of lowering noise and improving energy efficiency. SOLUTION: The maximum load of the forklift is determined depending not upon the relief pressure of a relief valve, but upon the maximum torque of a hydraulic motor 27. When a fork 10 is raised by the hydraulic motor 27 to reach the lift end, even if the relief valve is not operated, the generation torque of the hydraulic motor 27 computed by a CPU 24 is raised to reach a preset torque, and the generation torque of the hydraulic motor 27 is limited not to increase more than the preset torque. Even if the relief valve is not operated and also the generation torque of the hydraulic motor 27 does not reach the preset torque, when the detected rotational frequency of the hydraulic motor 27 reaches the preset rotational frequency, the detected rotational frequency of the hydraulic motor 27 is limited not to increase more than the preset rotational frequency.
