PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling convergence of an interlace projection TV are provided to improve the accuracy of the convergence control by accurately outputting vertical change in brightness of a reference pattern by optical sensors. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling convergence of an interlace projection TV includes the steps of generating a predetermined reference pattern moving in vertical direction on a video display device(S10), measuring the change in brightness of the reference patterns while the reference pattern is moving(S30), controlling a deflection circuit to scan any one of odd scan lines and even scan lines on the video display device while the brightness change is measured(S20), and calculating distortion degree of the reference pattern by a magnetic field based on the change of the brightness to calculate compensation data to a video signal output by the video display device(S40-S60).
