The invention relates to a method for detecting and selecting foreign bodies in cigarettes. The tobacco is exposed to a microwave beam in the cigarette machine, and a signal SD relating to the density of the tobacco as well as a signal SF relating to the humidity of the tobacco are produced. The density signal SD and the humidity signal SF are evaluated together in order to dete ct the presence or absence of foreign bodies in the tobacco.
