PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing device which can adjust the quantity of line light irradiating printing paper according to the printing paper in use without changing the light quantity distribution of the line light emitted by a line light source, in a printing device which prints images by using the line light source. SOLUTION: A printing part 6 prints the image by irradiating the printing paper P with the line light by using an LED array 8. The device is equipped with LCSs(liquid crystal shutters) 11 which control output gradations of the image by adjusting the quantity of monochromatic light by pixels according to original image information and an optical retardation plate 10 which has width corresponding to at least the width of the line light in a horizontal scanning direction and optically uniform characteristics. The optical retardation plate 10 is arranged between the LED array 8 and the LCS 11 and varies the optical path length of the line light passing in the optical retardation plate 10.
