PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump water heater and a method for controlling the same, which enables operation without useless heating. SOLUTION: The heat pump water heater is provided with an inverter driven compressor 16 for compressing refrigerant, a refrigerant-water heat exchanger 27, and a hot water storage tank 26 for storing water heated by the heat exchanger 27. The heater is also provided with a control unit 15A for controlling the operating frequency of the compressor 16 in accordance with the outside air temperature, and a target heating temperature of the hot water stored in the tank 26, which is set in terms of the outside air temperature.
