PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dial gage which is low-cost and whose high accuracy and high reliability can be guaranteed. SOLUTION: The dial gage comprises a case 1 and a spindle 2 which is supported by the case 1 so as to be freely slidable in its axial direction. The case 1 is provided with a first scale S1 which is fixed to the case 1, a second scale S2 which is fixed to the spindle 2 and which faces the first scale S1, and an encoder 8 which detects the displacement of the spindle 2 is constituted. The spindle 2 is formed of unquenched carbon tool steel (or carbon steel), and its outer circumference is coated with a thin layer 22 as an abrasion-resistant layer by an ion plating operation.
