PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably carrying out a hydrogenation purification of a crude 1,4-butanediol obtained by distilling hydrolyzed solution and reacting butadiene with acetic acid and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst to produce a reaction product containing 1,4-diacetoxybutene, hydrogenating the reaction product, and hydrolyzing the hydrogenated product. SOLUTION: The crude 1,4-butanediol having <=0.5 wt.% concentration of 2-(4'-hydroxybutoxy)tetrahydrofuran based on the amount of the 1,4-butanediol is extracted from a lower part of a distillation column of a hydrolyzed liquid as a side stream, and the extracted crude 1,4-butanediol is subjected to the hydrogenation reaction.
