A MOTION ESTIMATION METHOD AND A SYSTEM FOR A VIDEO CODER

Block-based segmentation in the motion field coding block (14) is used and prediction error is analyzed in a motion field estimator block (12) in order to decide if the macro-block should be split. The coding block (14) makes the final decision on the motion message to be transmitted and the motion information is fed back to the estimator block. If the motion estimator exceeds a threshold, the next motion estimator in the series is selected. Independent claims are included for an encoder, for a mobile terminal, for a data communication network and for a codec.
