A portable laser system for medical applications comprises light generating means; control means, and power supply means adapted to supply power to the light generating means and the control means. The power supply means comprises a battery, and the control means is adapted to prevent the supply of power to at least the light generating means when the laser system has not been operated for a predetermined period of time.
