PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder with a simple double-feed prevention mechanism which does not necessitate enlargement of a device and a significant cost increase. SOLUTION: A pressure plate 16 is mounted in the stacking part of the sheet feeder in such a way as to be rotatable about a rotation shaft 16b at its upper end portion and is biased toward a paper feed roller 11. The movement of the pressure plate 16 is controlled by both a cam 16a provided at the lower end portion of the pressure plate and a cam 22a which rotates along with the paper feed roller 11. A separating roller 12 biased toward the paper feed roller 11 catches sheets between itself and the paper feed roller 11 and separates the sheets one by one from a bundle of sheets on the pressure plate 16 by means of the force of friction against the paper. The sheets on the pressure plate 16 are forced to abut the paper feed roller 11 after the separating roller 12 abuts the paper feed roller 11.
