PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a damage of a mold surface due to a foreign matter by eliminating stopping of a movable platen caused by an excessively low movable mold compressing force and stopping the platen by a resistance of the foreign matter even when the matter adhered to the mold surface of the movable mold or a fixed mold is relatively small. SOLUTION: An apparatus for clamping the mold of an injection molding machine comprises a mold unit having the fixed mold and the movable mold, a movable mold support member for supporting the movable mold, a crosshead, a toggle mechanism having a base end mounted at a toggle mechanism support member, and a distal end mounted at the movable mold support member, a drive source for moving the crosshead, and a controller for gradually lowering the mold clamping force of the drive source if a position of the movable mold support member advanced into a section for raising a toggle magnification of the toggle mechanism, when the movable member support member is advanced to clamp the mold.
