A lighting unit (1) comprises a base (2) having a lamp holder and a trough-shaped cover (5) removably connected to the base. The unit has a screen (7) between the base and the base of the cover (5a) and this is quite transparent at least in the region of the screen. An Independent claim is also included for a base for the above having long sections to which end pieces are attached.
