A method for restoring articles made of building materials which have ionogenic components and which are contaminated by deposition of extraneous materials, erosion or conversion of the ionogenic components, is characterized in that a humidifiable carrier, having a powdered ion exchanger (20) distributed therein is applied onto a surface area (52) of the article (50), said ion exchanger (20) is selected in such a way that it selectively exchanges ions in the contaminated article up to a certain depth, said ion exchanger acts over a time period with maintaining a humid condition of the carrier, and said carrier together with the ion exchanger (20) is finally removed from said article (50) (Fig. 5). <IMAGE>
