摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique by which bright projected images can be obtained even with a projection lens of a small aperture of a projection type display device. SOLUTION: The luminous flux from a light source 1 is separated into the luminous fluxes of three primary colors; r, g and b by a dichroic prism 2. Optical modulation elements 4r, 4g and 4b are illuminated with these primary colors; r, g and b respectively directly or by a mirror 3. The optical modulation elements 4r, 4g and 4b comprise liquid crystal panels put, for example, between polarizers and analyzers. The luminous fluxes r, g and b are intensity modulated with two-dimensional images by the optical modulation elements 4r, 4g and 4b, are synthesized by a dichroic prism 6 and are projected and displayed onto a projection screen by a projection lens 7. The incident sides or exit sides of the optical modulation elements 4r, 4g and 4b are provided with field lenses 5r, 5g and 5b having focal lengths approximately equal to the optical path lengths from the optical modulation elements 4r, 4g and 4b to the projection lens 7.
