PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable stairway that can be used as a stairway when the stairway is used and can be stored compactly at site when the stairway is not used. SOLUTION: In this variable stairway, footboards 13 are arranged movably and horizontally. When the stairway is used as a stairway, the footboards 13 are arranged in stair-like states, and when this stairway is stored, the footboards 13 are arranged vertically in a line in a shelf-like state. The footboards 13 are supported and guided by horizontal rails 15a and 15b laid on a ceiling 5a or at least on one side of a floor via support materials 17. The footboards 13 and support materials 17 respectively have housing spaces formed by shifting the supporting points of the footboards 13 in the housing direction, with the support points of the footboards 13 positioned in the housing direction in the housed state being shifted longer, for housing the support materials 17 of the next footboards 13 on the opposite sides of the footboards 13 in the housing direction.
