PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device for performing stable automatic dimming control of a display device in accordance with an ambient environment in which illumination variation is large from a low illumination to a high illumination, and its automatic dimming controlling method. SOLUTION: A display control unit 2 decides whether to be indoor light or outdoor light on the basis of illuminations outputted by optical sensors 7 and 8 having different spectroscopic sensitivity characteristics and calculates an optimum luminance by using functions prepared in each of the optical sensors, and a luminance adjustment circuit 5 performs dimming control of a back light 11 on the basis of the calculated luminance.
