PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a measuring error in a magnetostrictive sensor to accurately measure a stress. SOLUTION: In this stress measuring method for measuring the stress acting on a steel material 1 using the magnetostrictive sensor 2 for which structure integrated with a core of an excitation coil and a core of a detection coil is adopted, the magnetostrictive sensor 2 is brought close to the steel material 1, the excitation coil is electrified to excite the steel material 1, an excitation voltage generated in the excitation coil by the electrification, and an output voltage induced in the detection coil by the excitation are detected, an impedance is calculated based on an excitation current in the electrification for exciting the steel material 1 in the magnetostrictive sensor 2, and based on the voltage generated in the excitation coil, stress sensitivity corresponding to the calculated impedance is estimated referring to a relationship between a preliminarily found impedance about the steel material 1 and the stress sensitivity, and a level of the stress acting on the steel material 1 is calculated, based on the estimated stress sensitivity and the output voltage.
