PURPOSE: A process for preparing low molecular weight polysaccharides and oligosaccharides thereof by reacting polysaccharides in the presence of a catalyst without a spraying dry process and a freeze drying process after the polysaccharides are dispersed in a solvent is provided which produces the titled compound effectively and economically in a solid state within a short time. CONSTITUTION: The process for preparing low molecular weight polysaccharides and oligosaccharides thereof comprises the steps of adding a decomposition catalyst to a mixture solvent of water, organic solvents or two or more solvents and dispersing a predetermined concentration of polysaccharides in the solvent; and heating at specified temperatures in a dispersed state or irradiating light. The low molecular weight polysaccharides and oligosaccharides thereof are a bioactive material capable of being widely used for medicals, food additives, cosmetics, natural agricultural chemicals and medical materials.
