PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus wherein the accuracy of the flaw detection of a specimen such as a roll or the like by using surface waves as ultrasonic waves is enhanced. SOLUTION: In the ultrasonic flaw detection method, the ultrasonic waves are used, and the ultrasonic waves are made incident on the specimen to be flaw-detected at an angle ofθi satisfying the expression ofθi=sin<-1> (C1/C2), where C1 represents the sound velocity of the ultrasonic waves in a probe, C2 represents the sound velocity of the ultrasonic waves in the specimen to be flaw-detected, andθi represents the angle of incidence of the ultrasonic waves with reference to the surface of the specimen. Thereby, the ultrasonic waves are made incident on each specimen at the angle of incidenceθi whose transmission efficiency is best, and the accuracy of the flaw detection is enhanced.
