PURPOSE: A battery device and method for controlling operation of a battery device is provided to accurately display the battery state to users in accordance with the result of self-diagnosis. CONSTITUTION: A battery device comprises a battery pack(1) formed of unit cells for charging/discharging power; a power cutoff unit for cutting off power upon occurrence of overload of the battery pack; a data interface(40) for connection to an external source; a battery state sensing unit for sensing the state of the battery pack and the power cutoff unit; and a control unit(20) for outputting data indicating the state of the battery sensed by the battery state sensing unit, through the data interface when a data request signal is input through the data interface. The battery state sensing unit includes a battery cell sensing unit(34) for sensing the charging/discharging voltage of the battery cell which serves as a minimum unit for charging/discharging of the battery pack.
