PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a working substance for magnetic refrigeration presenting a large magnetocaloric effect in the vicinity of a room temperature. SOLUTION: This substance has an NiAs type hexagonal structure in a ferromagnetic phase and a third element substitutable for the second element, and brings about a magnetic phase transition in a temperature range not lower than 230 K to lower than 318 K.
