The drum emptying process involves separating the drum bottom from the drum and pressing out the contents with a pressing body, using an emptying device (10) with a cutting ring (12) to remove the drum bottom (58) from the drum (18). The device includes a pressing body in the form of a ram (36) which can be moved by a hydraulic cylinder (40) along a longitudinal axis (17) towards the cutting ring. A stop (14) supports the drum against forces in the direction of movement as the material is pressed out by the ram.
