PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge device with a simple structure suitable for a middle- folding appliance such as a cellphone, having a small number of components. SOLUTION: This hinge device is provided with a tubular case-like base 1 and a shaft 2 disposed in an axial position inside the base 1. The base 1 or the shaft 2 is axially displaceable or turnable relative to the shaft 2 or the base 1. The hinge device is provided with a spring 3 provided between the base 1 and the shaft 2. When the base 1 and the shaft 2 relatively turn around the axis of the shaft 2, the spring 3 acts such that torsional torque is generated, and energizes the base 1 and the shaft 2 such that a folding part inner face of a base end and an end face of the shaft 2 are axially pressure-contacted. Friction generated between the pressure-contacted faces stops the base 1 and the shaft 2 in an arbitrary angle position within a prescribed rotation range against the torsional torque. Recessed and projecting engagement means formed in the pressure-contacted faces lock a turn in a specific turn position of the base 1 and the shaft 2. The locking of the recessed and projecting means is released by pushing an end part of the base 1 or the shaft 2 projected from an exterior component of the cellphone or the like, and the shaft 2 turns up to an allowable maximum position by the spring 3.
