PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical writing unit in which high image quality writing is ensured with a small circuit scale. SOLUTION: A unit performing optical writing based on inputted image data comprises a laser diode 3, an LD modulating section 2 for controlling the laser diode 3, a basic writing clock generating section 6 being controlled to output a specified clock, and a section 5 performing phase control of the writing clock for alignment of writing position based on an inputted write sync signal. The unit further comprises a phase lag control section 4 for designating phase lag of the writing clock to the phase sync control section 5, and a section 1 for designating an amount of lag to the phase lag control section 4 and performing image processing for image writing. Optical writing is performed by altering a dot matrix pattern being written by the laser diode 3.
