The invention relates to GPS and GLONASS satellite positioning receivers. A novel receiver architecture is provided for receiving signals from and calculating a position using both GPS satellites and GLONASS satellites. Sai d architecture comprises a radio reception chain with an antenna (10), frequen cy conversion circuits (18), an ultra-high-rate analog-to-digital converter (38 ) for the GLONASS channel, and a signal processing circuit with a plurality of service-integrated channels for receiving both GPS and GLONASS signals. Said circuit (40) uses a programmable pseudo-random code generator and a phase servo loop using a local oscillator to produce a local translated carrier frequency. The oscillator is controlled in such a way that a starting frequency is set for satellite signal acquisition. The resulting receiver avoids dependence on one or other of the satellite networks as one network m ay be used should the other fail.
