PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rationally arrange respective electrode sets provided in an electrolytic cell and to energize them to efficiently perform electrolysis in the electrode sets, in a water treatment apparatus for subjecting water to be treated to sterilization treatment using the electrolytic cell. SOLUTION: In the water treatment apparatus having the electrolytic cell equipped with a plurality of the electrode sets each comprising at least two electrode plates arranged in almost parallel to a water flowing direction and energizing the electrode sets to electrolyze water, the electrolytic capacities of the respective electrode sets are made different corresponding to the flow velocity distribution of water flowing through the electrolytic cell.
