A catalyst system for the polymerization of compounds containing at least one <FORM:1013363/C3/1> group comprises (a) a compound having the general formula Men(NRR1)n where Me is a transition metal of Group IVa, Va, VIa, or VIII of the Mendel</>geeff Periodic Table, n is the valency of the metal, and the group NRR1 is an amino group where R and R1 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, acryl, or cycloalkyl radicals, or together form a heterocyclic radical in which N is the heteroatom, (b) an organometallic compound or hydride of a metal of Group I, II or III, or a Lewis base complex thereof. The exemplified (a) compound is Ti[N(C2H5)2]. Exemplified (b) compounds are AlHCl2.(C2H5)4O, H2AlN(CH3)2, AlH3N(CH3)3, Al(C2H5)3, and Al(C2H5)3.(C2H5)2O. The polymerizable compounds may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, butadiene, isoprene or piperylene. The polymerization is effected in an inert diluent under conventional "low-pressure" conditions. Polybutadiene prepared using the catalyst has a predominantly 1,2-syndiotactic structure. |
