PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording and reproducing device and a method therefor which make reading out of data possible with a servo-less reading head and are capable of making the size of a reading device smaller, the cost effectiveness thereof higher and the latency of a drive smaller. SOLUTION: The data to be recorded to a recording medium is split in data splitting means 1; respective pieces of the split data are allocated to the bases of half-wave rectifying waveforms of different periods in half-wave rectifying waveform synthesizing means 3; the respective bases and the respective products of coefficients are added and synthesized with the values of the split data allocated to the respective bases as the coefficients of the respective bases; such patterns to generate the wave fronts of the light on the recording medium at which the half-wave rectifying waveform synthesizing waveforms synthesized by the half-wave rectifying waveform synthesizing means 3 can be obtained as reconstructed images are outputted in recording pattern output means 5; and these outputted patterns are recorded to the recording medium by medium writing means 7.
