PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for encoding the position information of a digital map with a little data amount by utilizing the technology of compression encoding. SOLUTION: In the encoding method for encoding data expressing a shape vector on the digital map, a node string expressing the shape vector or position information expressing a shape is subjected to arithmetic processing so as to be expressed in statistically deflected data and the statistically deflected data is encoded to reduce the data amount. When transferring the vector shape of the digital map, the amount of data to be transferred can be remarkably reduced.
