PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively forming a coating layer which can chemically be bonded with diamond and a metal without involving a special equipment requiring an expensive cost and dangerous operation. SOLUTION: The inside of a sealable reaction vessel is made into an oxygen- containing atmosphere. After that, a coating material metal or a metallic compound capable of releasing a coating material metal and diamond particles are arranged at the inside of the reaction vessel. The coating material metal or metallic compound is heated to generate the gas or vapor of the metal or metallic oxide, and the gas or vapor is introduced onto the surfaces of the diamond particles, and they are contacted with the diamond particles to form metallic carbide on the surfaces of the diamond particles.
