PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact zoom lens whose optical performance is excellent and whose chromatic difference of magnification, especially, is made small by using a diffraction optical element. SOLUTION: This zoom lens has a 1st lens group having negative refractive power, a 2nd lens group having positive refractive power and a 3rd lens group having positive refractive power in order from an object side. In the case of varying power from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, the 1st lens group and the 2nd lens group are moved. One or more lens groups include a plastic lens, and the plastic lens has a diffraction optical surface rotationally symmetric with respect to an optical axis.
