PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical glass having a high refractive index, a large Abbe's number and a low density and in particular, satisfying the requirements in the application field of reading/writing systems and to provide an optical element produced from the optical glass. SOLUTION: The optical glass has >=1.70 refractive index nd , >=35 Abbe's numberνd and <=4.5 g/cm<3> densityρ, and the optical element for an optical data transmission device comprises the above glass. The optical glass is useful for an optical element of a reading/writing device having a mechanically movable head for reading/writing, and preferably as a pickup lens for reading/ writing techniques.
