PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the recognition precision of a character string. SOLUTION: When character string pattern data are inputted (S201 and S202), a recognition candidate character string is obtained and sequenced (S203 to S205) according to character string reliability as the value obtained by dividing the sum of corresponding character reliability by the total number of the characters in the character string. The recognition character string placed in specific order and a recognition candidate character string put out of the specific order are sequenced again (S206 and S207) according to the character string reliability of mutually different partial character strings that they have. Consequently, the character string reliability showing the accuracy of recognition is the value obtained by dividing the total of the corresponding character reliability by the total number of the characters, i.e., a normalized value which does not depend upon whether the number of the characters in the character string is large or small, so the recognition candidate character string is outputted in accurate order based upon the recognition precision.
