PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near infrared ray detecting element in which luminous intensity of visual light is not attenuated remarkably when the element keeps being irradiated with a laser beam of high power. SOLUTION: In this infrared ray detecting element, infrared ray sensitive composition which generates visual light by irradiation of infrared ray is borne on a retainer. The composition is characterized by containing compound whose 2-photon absorption cross section to infrared ray is at least 10<2> GM (1 GM=1×10<-50> cm<4> s molecule<-1> photon<-1> ).
