PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily widen dynamic range, without complicating the structure of a device. SOLUTION: Pixel signals of odd-numbered lines outputted from a solid-state image pickup element 34 are amplified at a larger amplification factor by an amplifier 361 and are A/D converted by an A/D converter, and pixel signals of even numbered lines are amplified at a small amplification factor by an amplifier 381 and are A/D converted by an A/D converter 38. If the level of the A/D converted pixel signals of odd numbered lines which are amplified at the larger amplification factor does not exceeds a specified value, the pixel signals of odd numbered lines are transferred to an image memory 48 to be stored in corresponding addresses. If the level of the pixel signals of odd numbered lines exceeds specified value, the pixel signals of the even-numbered lines adjacent to the odd lines, which have the same vertical addresses are boosted by a prescribed multiple and are transferred to the memory 48 to be stored in corresponding addresses.
