PURPOSE: A method for testing a path in an out-of-service state of a switching system is provided to use a call processing function without allocating bands, and to test the performance of an optional switch link in the out-of-service state so as to diagnose an error state of the link, recognize a maximum transmission capacity and decide the performance of a new path. CONSTITUTION: A path test is requested in an out-of-service state, and whether service connection is under progress on a test object path is checked. If a service under progress exists, service connection under progress on the test object path is re-checked after a predetermined time to block the path after the end of the service under progress. If service connection under progress does not exist, the test path is blocked and a test cell is generated in a test unit to transmit the generated test cell to the test path. The test cell returned after being passed the test path is analyzed by the test unit, and an analyzed result is notified to an operator.
