An improved preparation of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate(A2EH) includes a treatment of the main impurity 2-ethylhexyl acetate by treatment with MeOH or EtOH to form methyl acetate or ethyl acetate. Preparation of A2EH by direct esterification of acrylic acid with 2-ethylhexanol followed by washing of the crude A2EH with water,then heading of light products including A2EH, 2-ethylhexanol and some 2-ethylhexyl acetate which is recycled to the esterification reaction, in a distillation column(C1) ; the headed A2EH is then directed to a distillation column (C3) from which it is obtained at the head purified from heavy products. Part of the light products from C1 is subjected to a methanolysis or ethanolysis on a fixed bed(R) of ion exchange resins, the resulting effluent being passed to a distillation column C2 to obtain: (i) a mixture of MeOH or EtOH , methyl or ethyl acrylate and methyl or ethyl acetate at the head, this being eliminated ; and (ii) at the base, a mixture of A2EH and 2-ethylhexanol, with an amount of 2-ethylhexyl acetate less than that contained in the light products, this being recycled to the esterification reaction.
