The invention relates to an input device in a vehicle and a method using sai d device. The input device (15) comprises a scrolling device (17) and at least one key (21A; 21B; 21C) for selecting and inputting characters from a character set (27). At least one part of the character set (27) is displayed on a display screen (23) in lines and columns, and a character is inputted b y means of the scrolling device (17) which is used to preselect part of a colu mn or a whole column, and by means of the at least one key (21A; 21B; 21C) whic h is used to select a character from a line of the pre-selected column.
