<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for polishing the periphery of an optical fiber preform for controlling fluctuation in characteristics in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber, by which the periphery of the optical fiber preform can be polished into a desired outer diameter. SOLUTION: The outer diameter of an optical fiber preform 1 is polished into a desired outer diameter by flame polishing. The amount of polishing of the optical fiber preform 1 can be controlled by controlling either or both of the moving speed of a burner 5 and the flow rate of gas supplied to the burner 5, and thereby the polishing accuracy can be improved. The optical fiber, obtained by drawing the optical fiber preform 1 produced by the above method, is made small in the fluctuation of characteristics in the longitudinal direction and improved in the yield.</p> |
