PURPOSE: A cooling water cooling apparatus employing a heater core and a control method thereof are provided to improve the cooling efficiency of the cooling water by cooling the cooling water passing through a heater core with air and to enhance the use efficiency of an engine room by reducing the size of a radiator and a cooling fan. CONSTITUTION: A heater core(10) is installed at the inlet part of a hot air path. An atmosphere discharge port(20) is formed on the hot air path to communicate with the atmosphere. An opening and closing valve(21) installed at the rear end of the hot air path selectively opens and closes the atmosphere discharge port by the controlling of a control unit(23). A water temperature sensor(22) senses the temperature of the cooling water. The control unit opens the opening and closing valve and turns on a blower(5) depending on the temperature of the cooling water. Thus, the cooling water passing through the heater core is cooled by the air passing through the hot air path.
