The engine comprises a casing (2) with a base (3) and cover (4), with at least one rotary piston-cylinder unit (10) mounted inside it. The piston-cylinder unit comprises a rotary shaft (D) and at least one piston which can move up and down inside a cylindrical cavity. The piston is connected via a tappet rod (5) extending in the piston length direction to a runner roll (6) or tappet. A single cam (9) fixed to the casing base has a rippled curved surface (20) extending around the shaft, with which it comes into contact in order to control the up and down motion of the piston. A single rotation of the piston-cylinder unit and shaft through 360 deg. will result in the following work steps : removal of the fuel-air mixture by suction, compaction of this mixture, ignition and combustion of this mixture and expansion of the combustion gases, and expulsion of the combustion gases.
