934,567. Coated silver fibres. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 21, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 19532/62. Class 56. A high strength fused silica fibre with a maximum diameter of 50 microns is provided with a thin coating of pyrolytic graphite on its surface. Preferably the thickness of the coating does not exceed 1000 Angstroms. A fused silica fibre 10 of diameter 11 is passed through a heating zone 15 supplied by gas oxygen flames from a heating ring 20 and drawn down to a diameter 12. Immediately below the ring 20, the fibre 10 passes through a fused silica cylinder 25 heated by a surrounding resistance furnace 26 and through which a carbonaceous gas is directed through the lower end so that, as the heated fibre 10 meets the heated gas, the carbonaceous gas is thermally dissociated and carbon deposited as a thin coating. |
