PURPOSE: A portable terminal system enabling decting a location and a method for controlling mode setup by the detected location are provided to enable a portable terminal to detect locations pre-classified according to areas of action of a user, and to automatically control a setup mode appropriately for the detected locations. CONSTITUTION: Location indicators(20a,30a,40a) store location information according to locations preset by a user. When a portable terminal(50) enters a predetermined range, the location indicators(20a,30a,40a) are activated and wirelessly transmit the location information to the portable terminal(50). When approaching the location indicators(20a,30a,40a) within a predetermined range, the portable terminal(50) wirelessly communicates with the location indicators(20a,30a,40a). The portable terminal(50) receives the location information wirelessly transmitted from the location indicators(20a,30a,40a), and controls a mode appropriately for the received location information. At this time, the location indicators(20a,30a,40a) and portable terminal(50) wirelessly communicate with each other based on Bluetooth. And the portable terminal(50) has a built-in Bluetooth chip(50a) to wireless communicate with the location indicators(20a,30a,40a) within the predetermined range.
