PURPOSE: A jake brake control unit and method of a commercial vehicle is provided to secure proper damping force and improve service life of braking lining by automatically interlocking a jake brake in operating a foot brake. CONSTITUTION: A jake brake system generates engine-damping force with opening an exhaust valve of the appropriate cylinder according to the jake brake mode selected by a jake brake lever switch. A jake brake control unit comprises a vehicle speed sensor(10), an engine speed sensor(20), a jake brake lever switch(30), an interlocking-setting switch(40), a foot brake switch(50), a clutch switch(60), an accelerator switch(70), an engine control unit(80), a jake brake lamp(90), and jake solenoid valves(91,92,93). The foot brake switch senses working state of a foot brake pedal. The interlocking-setting switch sets interlocking of the foot brake and jake brake. The vehicle sensor senses the speed of the vehicle. The engine control unit generates engine-damping force with operating jake brake modes orderly according to reduction rate of the vehicle sensed by the vehicle speed sensor and time lag in operating the brake pedal if the interlocking-setting switch sets up the interlocking between the foot brake and the jake brake.
