The invention comprises 1-hydroxymethyl-4 - phospha - 3,5,8 - trioxabicyclo - [2,2,2]-octane-4-sulphide having the formula <FORM:0992563/C2/1> its esters, and surface - active compounds obtained by reacting it with alkylene oxides. The compound may be obtained by reacting thiophosphoryl chloride with a substantially equivalent amount of pentaerythritol at 100-200 DEG C., cooling the reaction mixture and isolating the product. An acid acceptor, e.g. triethylamine or pyridine, may be present. The product may be reacted with an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide or butylene oxide, to form a surface-active agent. Esters of the product, e.g. the stearyl ester obtained by reacting the product with stearyl chloride are useful as lubricity improvers in oils.
