Apparatus for making pipes, cables and strands comprises an extrusion head in which a tube 9 for the passage of a pipe, cable, or strand is disposed coaxially within a bore in a mandrel 2 and has an outlet co-terminous with or projecting slightly outward from the bore outlet, and means, e.g. a connector 13, for a suction pump, is provided for maintaining the space 7 between the tube 9 and the mandrel 2 under sub-atmospheric pressure. The apparatus is particularly useful for coating with insulating material a cable 6 having a corrugated metal sheath which has received (in a tank, not shown) a viscous coating 15 of an anto-corrosion material. The reduced pressure in the space 7 prevents heating and lowering of the viscosity of the coating 15, and also assists in drawing the insulating material, supplied through the annular die passage 3, on to the cable. In a modified apparatus the space 7 is wholly or partly filled with thermally insulating material.
