A slotted rail (160) and a carriage (130) are disposed within a scanner (150) which is operable to scan an image on a media. A motor gear assembly (110) coupled to the carriage has a motor (120) that generates a rotational force to a shaft connected to a toothed gear (140) which is engageable with the slots of the slotted rail. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a carriage for an imaging system; (b) and a method of imaging an object in an imaging system.
