摘要 PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device wherein a liquid crystal substance having spontaneous polarization of large magnitude can be used and high speed response can be realized even if the voltage applied to the liquid crystal substance is low. CONSTITUTION: A ferroelectric liquid crystal having spontaneous polarization is packed between alignment layers 11 and 12 provided on glass substrates 2 and 4, respectively, to form a liquid crystal layer 13. The maximum quantity Q of electric charge injected to each pixel by switching of a switching element, the surface area A of each pixel electrode 40 and the magnitude Ps of the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal per unit area satisfy the relational formula 2Ps.A>Q. The cone angle 2&thgr; (&thgr;: the tilt angle) of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is 45° or more.
